Can You Have a Fixed Retainer After Invisalign?

Yes, many patients can have a fixed bonded retainer after Invisalign or another clear-aligner treatment. The important question is not whether aligners were used, but what retention plan is appropriate for your final tooth positions and bite.

Why is retention needed after aligners?

As with braces, teeth can move after active orthodontic treatment has finished. Clear aligners move teeth into planned positions, but they do not remove the biological tendency for teeth to change over time. Retention helps maintain the treatment result.

When is a fixed retainer fitted?

A fixed retainer is usually considered once active tooth movement is complete and the final tooth positions are suitable for bonding. The timing should fit with the wider treatment and retention plan.

Will I still need my clear removable retainers?

Often, yes. A fixed retainer typically controls only the bonded front teeth, whereas a clear removable retainer can maintain a larger part of the arch. Many patients therefore use both.

Can every Invisalign patient have one?

Not necessarily. Suitability depends on the bite, tooth positions, available space, oral hygiene and other clinical factors. In some bites, a fixed wire may be exposed to excessive contact or may not be the preferred option.

What if my Invisalign provider did not place one?

A fixed retainer may still be considered later, but the teeth and existing retention should be assessed first. It is particularly important to check whether any movement has already occurred and whether the proposed wire can be fitted passively.

What happens if my old fixed retainer breaks after aligner treatment?

Arrange a review promptly. If you also have clear retainers and they fit correctly, continue to use them according to your existing instructions while seeking advice. Do not try to glue or bend the wire yourself.
